Primary Takeaways for the Week

  • After finishing the six precedent studies this week, several factors I had never considered came to light. I managed to visit LoveWorks for the humanitarian office, Couch Restaurants and Cate Main for my cafeteria, and Bizzell Memorial Library and the downtown Oklahoma City Public Library for my library space. Through these visits I had a better understanding of circulation, proportional requirements for spaces, and aesthetic characteristics.

Process

  • While searching for precedent studies online, I focused on finding places that aesthetically told a story through pictures and had a floor plan that I could analyze.

  • The first two precedent studies at Cate Main and Bizzell Library were chosen due to their ability to handle large numbers of people.

  • LoveWorks was chosen as a precedent study for the humanitarian office, because they host programming events in the same building as their offices.

  • Because the area I studied in Bizzell was based on study areas and not actual book shelves, I needed to further my precedent studies. The same applied for the kitchen area of the cafeteria. Therefore, I visited the downtown OKC Library and Couch Restaurants to find more quantitative information.

Summary of Findings

  • Office

  • Loveworks designed its facilities with students in mind. The offices encouraged collaboration instead of privacy and writing surfaces are constantly utilized. The space can adapt to the events that are being hosted at the time.

  • The Cisco office takes on the challenge of utilizing so many square feet by creating pathways with the furniture. When walls are used they serve as a double purpose as a writing surface or collaboration space.

  • Cafeteria

  • Cate Main utilized its space well by having wide circulation paths for the mass amount of people ordering food. Appropriate flooring changes occurred to fit the activities within the specific space.

  • La Tequila South provided wider walkways for more efficient work space. By opening up the kitchen to the tables, customers had another element of entertainments available to them.

  • Library

  • The Bizzell Memorial Library encouraged different learning styles by having a variety of seating options, whether it was lounge or task focus. Surfaces and materials also encourage interaction by either being writable or helping with acoustics.

  • The Los Gatos Public Library utilized the expansive windows by placing the visitors near the windows to read. This placement also better protects the books from sun damage. Having the staircase in the middle of the building encouraged circulation throughout the entire space instead of just a portion.
